Student Council requires mandatory attendance and participation at several events throughout the year. As a member of STUCO it will be important for your student to participate & help STUCO build strong community ties with other organizations & the student body.
As a STUCO representative for Alma Martinez IS, students will be responsible to do the following:
1. Attend all General Student Council monthly meetings (one per month).
2. Participate in and promote AMIS Student Council activities.
3. Encourage peers to participate in student council activities/fundraisers.
4. Be a good citizen and role model at all times in class & in the hallways.
5. Earn no lower than a 70 in all classes, in order to be an active, voting member of STUCO.
We look forward to meeting with your student on Thursday. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Whiz Quiz
Whiz Quiz is a Trivia Jeopardy like club that will be on Tuesdays in STEM 116 from 4:15 to 5:15 pm. In Spring, we will start competitions across the district so students need reliable and consistent transportation.
This academic trivia quiz team will be composed of 5th & 6th grade students who will compete against other student teams from Mansfield and Kennedale schools.
Some important things you should know concerning this team competition:
- Competitions will be after school hours (usually 5-6 p.m.) on Tuesdays beginning in January and continuing through March. The competitions follow an oral question/answer format.
- Transportation to our away competitions is the responsibility of the parents. School personnel are not able to provide transportation for the students. Transportation MUST arrive on time after practices and games to pick up their students. After 3 late pick-ups(past 10 minutes), students may be removed from the team.
- Practices will be held weekly on Tuesdays (from 4:15-5:15 p.m.).
- Approximately 20 players will be selected for our team. 12 students are allowed to compete in each competition (4 students x 3 rounds of 22 questions each). The remaining students serve as alternates in the event of a teammate's unexpected absence or tie-breaking round. Alternates and players change weekly based on the quality of play in practice and competition.
- Whiz Quiz families are invited to provide pre-competition refreshments to our team as a way to give them a “boost” after school and before a competition. Please remember no nut-based products are allowed.
- We will most often go on a celebratory dinner out somewhere after tournaments (win or lose) if parents and students want to participate.
In order to try out and compete a student must maintain at least an 85 average in all subjects, satisfactory citizenship or better and return the application form to Mrs. Wall-Lopez in room 116 in the STEM Hall by the deadline.
Students who return this application on time will be given a written qualifying test of questions used in previous competitions. The multiple-choice qualifying test will be administered in October, and students will have 45 minutes to complete the test. Top scorers from the qualifying test will be selected to participate in competitions and the list will be posted. Students listed will start practice the following week.
Whiz Quiz competition is a very rewarding experience and we are proud to be part of Whiz Quiz this year. We look forward to the excellence of our students, faculty, and families. This is a considerable commitment for a 5th or 6th grader to make. Please discuss all of this information as a family. If your student is interested in trying out for our team please get one teacher as a reference below and make sure they turn in their form on time! Good luck and see you soon! If you have any questions please email stephaniewall-lopez@misdmail.org.
